Daddy Said, Memories of an Old Van Zandter
Daddy Said, Memories of an Old Van Zandter
By: Elvis Allen
Van Zandt County of early days comes alive, through the memories of James and Effie Allen of Van Zandt County. With deep roots in Van Zandt County, James and Effie married after James's return from Army service in World War I. They raised 12 children on their farm. Their reminiscences, taken from extensive interviews from their son Elvis, give a personal view of the hardships and triumphs of rural life in the early- to mid-20th century.
Often humorous, occasionally tragic, this book is all the more interesting because it is a true story.

Desperate Characters of Van Zandt County
Desperate Characters of Van Zandt County
Compiled and Edited by Cheryl Vaughn
A great reference for serious researchers of Van Zandt County, or for genealogy researchers. This book provides information on all persons in the Prisoner Record Book of the Van Zandt County Sheriff, from 1890 until 1917. The entries for each incarcerated person are brief: These are not biographies. (See photo of sample page.) There are, however, quick biographies of the eight county sheriffs who served during this period.

Stories Beneath the Stones
Stories Beneath the Stones, The Hidden History of a Small Texas Town, Told Through the Lives of Those Buried in the City Cemetery
History here is literally buried--under the headstones of Hillcrest Cemetery in the center of Canton, Texas. Authors Lawrence O. Greer and Benja Pittman Mize have unearthed it, however, and present a quick biography of every person buried in the graveyard, from the mid-1800s on. Hundreds of biographies, of farmers and outlaws, teachers and preachers, women and men, tell the story of a small Texas community over more than a century of struggle and success.
Based on years of research, this book is a must-read for family and history researchers. Also recommended for readers looking for gripping, chilling, and inspiring true stories.
